Anime Review: A Certain Scientific Railgun S Episode 21

September 8, 2013

Things seem to be going pretty well. After covering something that still was not that great, I get to continue watching something that has not disappointed me as much. Today, I will be reviewing A Certain Scientific Railgun S episode 21.

As I have given a series synopsis in an earlier post, I will not go over it again.

Having learned the truth about Febri and hearing the opinions of one of her clones, Misaka decides to investigate what is really going on.

However, in order to get any answers, Misaka must once again face the darkness within Academy City.

I kind of liked this episode. I was kind of surprised that the lollipops had a purpose. I never really suspected it, thinking that Febri was just like any other kid and liked candy a lot, though Saten and the others could not really handle the taste. It is funny how I have said many times that making assumptions based on little information is bad, yet here I am making assumptions anyway. Apparently, these lollipops are the very things keeping her alive. If I had to guess, and by the way things are explained in the episode, I would have to say that the lollipops are like iodine. After all, even if we eat what we need to survive, we can still die without getting iodine. On the other hand, there are people that are allegoric to iodine, and because I am not an expert in medicine, I am not too sure how those people will not suffer the effects of iodine deficiency. In the case of the lollipops, the lollipops deal with a toxin in Febri's body. It also seems more and more like STUDY was the one who created her, because one of the Misaka clones thinks that Febri went through something similar to the testament learning process the clones went through. With this in mind, and the fact that Nunotaba has been confirmed to be part of STUDY, I will have to agree with Misaka that Nunotaba seems to have been involved with making Febri. Speaking of testament, the Misaka clone also said that Febri told her that she too had an elder sister, which makes me wonder if Febri is a clone too. I also liked how the characters started having the same questions that I had during this arc. Of course, seeing as how they have been through a lot together, except for the Sisters Arc, where Misaka took center stage throughout most of it, I would not expect anything less. Another thing that I liked was that Misaka did not decide to take care of things on her own. With everything revealed this episode, I was getting the feeling that they were going to do the Sisters Arc again, only with different characters. While I have not read and/or watched every version of the arc, since I only have read it in the Railgun manga and seen the Magical Index and Railgun anime adaptations, I do not think that we need another version of it right now. In fact, if Misaka really did solo things again, it would probably be a rip off of the Sisters Arc. I also wonder what Therestina, who was an enemy is the first Railgun anime, has to say, seeing as Misaka was able to meet with her, thanks to Heaven Canceller. Outside of that, I cannot really think of anything else that I particularly liked. The fact that Misaka and her friends start investigating the mystery surrounding Febri and that this seems to not be a rip off of the Sisters Arc, for now anyway, does make things look pretty good.

Although I did like the episode, there are certainly some issues. However, since my only issue right now cannot be determined until the final episode, I will have to say that there is nothing worth mentioning.

Considering that things are still pretty interesting and our cast starts investigating, this was definitely worth watching. I only recommend this to fans of A Certain Scientific Railgun.
