Well, there was a lot of network activity recently, which I expected, so some might have experienced slower than usual load times. However, things should be getting back to normal soon, if they have not already. Anyway, I have covered six episodes of Detective Conan (Case Closed), and while waiting for the next set of books, I plan to continue on. Today, I will be reviewing Detective Conan (Case Closed) episode 7.
As I gave a series synopsis in an earlier post, I will not go over it again.
Although things seem like a peaceful day, it is ruined by the fact that a new client has arrived. He has come to ask Richard to find out why he has been receiving used toys and money, as well as flowers on a less frequent basis. Jimmy states that they may be gifts of gratitude from a patient who had a successful surgery, but the client does not remember any recent successful operations and is even surprised that Jimmy knew he was a surgeon. However, Jimmy's ability of observation might blow his cover as Conan Edogawa, when Rachel notices a similarity with Jimmy accomplishing the same in the first episode. Now, Jimmy must not only find out who sent that stuff to the doctor and why but also throw Rachel off the scent of the truth about the identity of Conan Edogawa.
I liked this episode much better than the previous episode. Unlike that one, not much, if anything, was obvious. There are not quite as many funny, but the fact that both Jimmy and Rachel blushed, when the Junior Detective League asked if she really knew Jimmy Kudo and if he was her boyfriend, was definitely funny. Rachel and George notice that Jimmy blushed and reply at the same time as Rachel. What was so funny is that even though she noticed the blushing, she still overlooked the obvious by wondering whom Jimmy was actually talking about. I would have marked this as a negative, but seeing as Rachel sometimes overlooks the obvious, just like she did in episode 2, I think this just makes things very funny. I was also impressed that Jimmy knew right away the client was a surgeon by looking at his hands. We certainly did not know that when he came into the office. At the same time, I do not have experience with the medical field, so I cannot really say if the marks that Jimmy noticed really do present themselves on the hands of surgeons or not. I also like the fact that Rachel did catch on pretty quickly of the possibility that Jimmy and Conan are the same person. After all, it has been established, even in the dub that Rachel and Jimmy have been friends since childhood. Because of this, Rachel would obviously know a lot about Jimmy, such as personality and mannerisms. Although she did not note that the blushing at the grocery store was significant, she noticed the obvious that Conan appeared in front her the same night that Jimmy left her to go home alone. I guess she is quite observant after all. This case, though not so obvious, was simple and refreshing, compared to how many times tricks are used to pull off murders in this series. The fact that Rachel does not seem outclassed by Jimmy in the area of observation, as well as the fact that not much is obvious is certainly a good thing for this episode.
Although I liked the episode, there was something that was not too pleasing. For example, Jimmy seemed way too relaxed in this episode. I will give him credit that he was serious about the case, but his focus blinded him to the overall situation. Even though the dramatic irony concerning Rachel's suspicions were quite interesting, Jimmy should have noticed that Rachel would figure out, like he worried over in episode 2, that Conan Edogawa was just an alias, since as I said earlier, Jimmy and Rachel have been childhood friends. In fact, it was not until he got some alone time that he even knew Rachel suspected that Jimmy and Conan were the same person. I guess she was good about hiding her suspicions this time around. However, I think this is just a minor issue, since even I lose track of things if I am focused on something or get too relaxed. Outside of that, I cannot really think of anything else that was bad. While it is an annoyance, the fact that Jimmy realizes too late that Rachel suspects the true identity of Conan does not really hurt this episode much.
Despite the fact that there was one annoyance, I think this episode was definitely worth watching. I would recommend this to fans of detective, mystery, and crime fiction, as well as fans of the Detective Conan (Case Closed) manga and anime, if they have not seen the early episodes. As for everyone else, I think that this definitely is definitely a good introduction to the series and detective, mystery, and crime fiction.
