Anime Review: A Certain Scientific Railgun S Episode 10

June 16, 2013

It Looks like I have not been good about maintaining this blog while I was out of town. On the bright side, I have been doing well in keeping up with my simulcast, which I was not too sure if I would be able to cover when I got back. Today, I will be reviewing A Certain Scientific Railgun S episode 10.

As I have given a series synopsis in an earlier post, I will not go over it again.

After Mugino dismissed her comrades, the fight between Mugino and Misaka finally takes place.

However, after having used up so much energy in the previous fights, destroying the facility and defeating Mugino may not be so easy for Misaka.

I enjoyed this episode. The fight between Meltdowner and Misaka was pretty much how I expected it to be. Having seen Misaka in top shape so much of the time, I think seeing Misaka do so well at her weakest, even more so here, made things much more enjoyable. It was even more enjoyable here because I felt like I really wanted to see how Misaka would deal with Meltdowner. The fight was exciting in the manga, but things still felt more exciting here. The thing that I liked the most though was seeing Meltdowner being taken down by the weapon of one of her own comrades. I do not really think that there is anything more humiliating to be taken out by one's own weapons, or an ally's, in this case. Of course, that did lead into some funny moments involving the members of ITEM that did make me chuckle. The fact that the fight between Meltdowner and Misaka was exciting, as well as the fact that I did get a chuckle out of this, did make this pretty enjoyable.

Although I did like the episode, there were certainly some issues. Even though the people behind the anime have been good about following the manga counterpart so far, and adding things here and there, this episode seemed like it dragged a bit, but not as much as the third Lord of the Rings movie or the final episode of Inuyasha: The Final Act. After Misaka achieved her goal and dealt with Mugino, I felt like it could have ended when Mugino found out about the Level 6 Shift project, because she was curious about why Misaka, a Tokiwadai student, was going after various facilities. However, it goes through to reveal that Tree Diagram was and showing the first encounter between Touma and Misaka, in the current arc, not first time ever. It would have probably been nice to end around the time that Misaka found out about the destruction of Tree Diagram, which happened in the first anime adaptation of A Certain Magical Index, but I definitely did not think ending it with an encounter with Touma was all that great. Yes, you guys can say that I would feel this way because I am not really a fan of Touma. On the other hand, I think it would have been nicer to see all the events that occur when they meet each other, not just have him make a small appearance. By showing him for just a little bit, I was not as excited for the arrival of the next episode as I would have been, had it ended before that point. Seeing as it does not affect things much though, I will just label it a minor issue. Outside of that, nothing else comes to my mind that I did not particularly like. While the fact that the episode felt like it dragged on did lessen my excitement for the next episode, it does not hurt the episode enough to make it a terrible episode.

Despite the fact that I felt like the episode dragged on a bit, the Meltdowner vs. Misaka fight did make it worth watching. I only recommend this to fans of A Certain Scientific Railgun.
