Anime Review: A Certain Scientific Railgun S Episode 8

June 2, 2013

Although I was not able to keep my promise with Detective Conan (Case Closed), I am glad that I am able to keep up with the simulcast I decided to pick up. Today, I will be reviewing A Certain Scientific Railgun S episode 8.

As I have given a series synopsis in an earlier post, I will not go over it again.

With Misaka continuing her attack on the various facilities connected to the Level 6 Shift project, her actions have been noticed and the people that have something to gain from the experiments hires a group to deal with Misaka.

Now, Misaka must handle the new threat that stands in her way of stopping the experiments.

I have to say that I really enjoyed this. As nice as it is to have an episode that focuses on Misaka's friends, things just seem much more exciting with Misaka around. Of course, that could be because she is the main protagonist of the Railgun series. I really liked how this had a lot action, which made the wait worth it, unlike the wait between episodes 2 and 3. In fact, I think I enjoyed the fight between Frenda and Misaka more in this episode than in the manga. Then again, it was quite exciting in the manga too, so I would have been mad had it not been exciting in the anime. It was also nice to see Misaka to have to go about this battle with a bit strategy. One thing that I noticed a lot in the last season, and others, at least those that think Touma makes a better main character than Misaka, have claimed, is that Misaka seems to head right into battle without a second thought, just like she did in episode 6, when Misaka 9982 died. Here, however, she seems to actually be paying attention to what Frenda is doing and makes moves based on her actions. That is exactly how one should handle a fight. After all, how does one expect to win by just rushing in? Yes, it can happen, but then it would be all based upon luck at that point. I also liked how Misaka was not the only one going after the ones behind the Level 6 Shift project. Apparently, Nunotaba has also decided to step into the spotlight, though like the manga I had thought that she got back into the project, despite her change in attitude towards the clones that she claimed to have experienced in episode 6. Besides, if she did return to the experiment, I doubt she would have left the room she was led to. The best part though was seeing Mugino come to Frenda's rescue. I cannot really say yet whether she did it out of concern or not, but it really got me excited because the best fight in the Railgun series is nearing and it is the first, aside from Misaka's encounter with Accelerator, between two level 5 espers. The fact that the fight between Frenda and Misaka seemed more enjoyable than the manga and that Misaka used strategy instead of heading right into battle, as well as the fact that the long awaited Meltdowner vs. Misaka fight is coming, sure did make this great.

Although I liked the episode, there are certainly some issues. However, seeing as things were still pretty faithful to the manga, and I cannot think of anything majorly wrong, I will have to say that there is nothing worth mentioning.

Considering that things were pretty exciting this episode, this was definitely worth watching. I only recommend this to fans of A Certain Scientific Railgun.
