Anime Review: Rewrite Episode 3

Kotaru looking at moon

I hope everyone is doing well this week.

Things got a bit stressful, but being able to watch something that one can enjoy makes things so much better.

As many know, I have decided to follow two simulcasts this season and caught up with both shows to the point where I can only cover the episodes as they come.

Today, I will be reviewing the latest episode of one of those shows, which is called Rewrite.

As I have given a series synopsis in an earlier post, I will not go over it again.

Occult club investigating

With the occult club officially reformed, Kotaru and the gang decide to embark on their first investigation.

However, when Kotaru notices the girl that attacked him and chases her, Kotaru gets wrapped in yet another incident that he cannot really explain.

Kotaru talking with Yoshino

While the pilot episode disappointed me a bit, the previous episode left a better impression and gave me a reason to continue on with this series.

However, things do not always remain good for multiple episodes in a row.

Fortunately, after watching this third episode, I liked this episode.

The comedy found in the last episode is still present and just as funny as it was the last time.

Of course, whether it remains funny or not is not something that can be ascertained as people grow tired of something much more quickly than others.

Still, that does not mean that 8bit should not be praised for at least being consistent so far.

After all, consistency is a very hard thing to achieve in any kind of work, unless that consistency is getting worse, like how many sequels and remakes fail to surpass the original work.

I am just kind of glad that this episode makes me think that I am seeing Sunohara as a main character, though Kotaru and Youhei Sunohara are not exactly the same kind of character.

I also liked how Kotaru seemed to understand his ability and explains it a bit for the audience.

Even though this is not technically new, seeing as Satoru Fujinuma from Boku Dake ga Inai Machi had a good grasp on how his time travelling ability worked, despite not having much control over it.

Then again, unlike Satoru, Kotaru actually knows how to use his abilities and its weaknesses.

Yes, there are things that are not really explained too well, such as one weakness that only the visual novel followers, and those who perused the wiki, know, but what is presented already makes me interested in seeing how Kotaru is going to hide his abilities from the other members.

I am hoping that it would create a few more comedic moments, like how Satoru Fujinuma still had his memories of the present while he was reliving 1988 and letting something slip that had not even happened yet to those close to him, especially if the mysterious girl that has appeared in all of the episode so far ends up being just as important as she is said to be in the visual novel.

Another thing that I liked was how this episode seemed to flow pretty well, even though there was a lot happening.

Seeing as this series will only be 13 episodes long, according to a comment made on my review of the pilot, unless more gets announced, this is to be expected, otherwise the series would probably turn out to be as bad as how Boku Dake ga Inai Machi and A Certain Scientific Railgun S ended.

As a result, I want to give 8bit a ton of praise, especially because the negative feelings towards them makes it sound like 8bit is just a bunch of amateurs, though some of the criticism that they have received may be well deserved, just like I know that not all of the stories I write or posts made here are good.

If 8bit can keep up the good work on more than just this series, they can definitely turn their image around, and that is what I like to see in people in groups or individually, not somebody that becomes worse because society says that you should be doing something a certain way.

In fact, if all works of fiction flowed as well as this episode did, we would probably be flooded with gems, instead of garbage, which is piling up in both traditionally published and self-published books.

Unfortunately, this kind of feat is pretty difficult to attain, no matter how much time and money is spent on a work.

The thing that I liked the most though was how things started happening around the mysterious girl with white hair.

Yes, things started happening to Kotaru whenever she was around, except for the times that she snuck into his room at night back in the other episodes, but she was not really involved in those incidents, at least that I know of, since I never read through Rewrite‘s visual novel.

Here, however, it looks like she is on the run and when Kotaru intervenes, he encounters a new face that has not appeared until now.

While the incident did not take up too much of the running time of this episode, it makes me wonder why this mysterious girl is being chased and what group, if any, this unknown individual associates with.

It could definitely be a coincidence, but I am beginning to think that she is going to be just as important in the anime as she is in the visual novel.

For now, this just gives me more reason to want to find out more about her, and even her name, though I kind of already know the name because I have looked through Rewrite‘s wiki.

8bit is doing a pretty good job of keeping me interested in this series, and, for that, I would want to tell them that they did a good job straight to their faces, though they would probably prefer it if I got the series on BluRay or from iTunes when it gets released in my area.

Outside of those things, I cannot really think of anything else that I particularly liked that could not be included with what I already brought up.

Because the comedy is still quite funny and Kotaru talks a bit about his own abilities, though not out loud, as well as the fact that the mysterious girl does seem like she is going to important in the anime made this episode very enjoyable.

Sakuya Ohtori

Although I liked the episode, there are some issues.

However, I cannot really think of anything that really annoyed me.

As a result, I will have to say that there is nothing worth mentioning.

I recommend this fans of Key’s other works and those that want something a bit different from what Key did before.

As for everyone else, this might be worth giving a try, because 8bit has been doing a relatively good job with series so far, though it is most likely not going to be next FMA or Pandora Hearts.

What are your thoughts on Rewrite episode 3? Did you like it or hate it? Was there something that you liked or hated that went unmentioned? Feel free to comment.
