Anime Review: Another Episode 9

March 12, 2012

Just in case you guys do not know already, the address is now dead, because I recently got a domain name. However, that does not affect my ability to post on this blog, which means I can still post reviews. Speaking of reviews, today, I will be reviewing episode 9 of Another.

As I gave a series synopsis in an earlier post, I will not go over it again.

In this episode, Kouchi and the gang come back from the trip they took to the beach. People are still shocked about what had happened to one of their classmates. However, there is no time to relax, before getting back to the daily grind. Kouchi and two of his classmates that went on the beach trip with him decide to look for the item that Matsunaga, whom they were looking for last episode, said he left behind in the place where class 3 used to meet. While in the old room they find a tape that may hold the answer to stopping the current events.

I really did enjoy this episode. The creepy atmosphere still seems to be present, which is nice for being 3/4 of the way through the show. Kouchi had another nightmare where each of the people who died accuses him of being the one at fault. However, I doubt that because of how much is pointing towards Reiko, which, I believe, has a connection with these events. I am not going to give my reasons though, outside of what I already said in the review of the previous episode, since I want to minimize spoilers. I also liked how the tape told them what people did not know until they tried the same thing that was mentioned on the tape, which Chibiki already discussed with Kouchi and Misaki. The old classroom itself had its own air of a creepy atmosphere. Then again, hardly any building that has been abandoned or made to available to the public, either of which occurred after a horrific death or tragedy, does not have that same feeling. It is also kind of nice that the anime took a deviation, not that it is the first time, from the manga, since this series is based on a novel from Japan. It can lead to either a bit more originality or being closer to the original source. I cannot say which is closer to the novel though because I have not read the novel itself. Most anime like this are usually based on the manga version. The only other series, which comes to mind, where the novelization came first and the anime differed from the manga was Gosick, whose manga version I have not completely read. The creepy atmosphere remains and there seems to be signs of further deviation from the manga, which may be good.

I cannot say that there is anything bad about this episode. The creepy atmosphere and uncertainty that comes from mysteries are still present. It just does not seem to have anything against it right now, since it has really had a comeback after episodes 5 and 6. Maybe, when we reach the final episode, there will be something. Nothing bad seems to have appeared during this episode, but there may be, which most likely will not be known until the end.

As the series seems to have not taken a dip the last few episodes, I do not think that there anything that I would think that would make it worth it to skip. I recommend this show to fans of horror and mystery.
